Who we are
BladeFoundry is a custom knife workshop based at 181 Kahikatea Drive, Melville, Hamilton 3206, New Zealand. We make kitchen knives to order and we deal directly with the people who buy them, so we end up holding a small amount of personal information about each customer. This policy explains what we hold, why we hold it and what you can ask us to do with it. You can reach us at bladefoundry@gmail.com or on +64 7 849 3027.
What we collect
We only ask for information we actually need to make and send a knife.
- Your name and, if you give it, the name on the invoice
- Email address and phone number so we can discuss your order
- Delivery address and, where relevant, a workshop or business address
- The details you send about your order, such as blade length, profile, handle timber and any sketches
- Payment reference details from our bank or payment provider (we never store full card numbers ourselves)
- Basic website analytics such as pages viewed and approximate region
How we use it
We use your information to quote, build, finish and ship your order, to answer questions, and to keep records for accounting and warranty purposes. If you have asked us to email you about new builds or workshop openings, we use your email for that as well, and every message includes a one-click unsubscribe. We do not sell, rent or trade your details to anyone.
Who else sees it
Couriers see your name and delivery address. Our accountant sees invoice records. Our email provider and website host process data on our behalf under agreements that stop them using it for their own purposes. We do not share your information with advertisers, and we do not transfer personal information outside New Zealand unless a service provider requires it, in which case we take reasonable steps to ensure comparable protection.
How long we keep it
Order and invoice records are kept for seven years because tax law requires it. Email threads, sketches and measurement notes are kept while the knife is under warranty and for a reasonable period afterwards in case you order again. If you want your enquiry deleted, ask and we will remove it unless we are legally required to keep it.
Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct anything wrong, and ask us to delete information we are not required to keep. Send the request to bladefoundry@gmail.com and we will respond within twenty working days. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
